Adult Unit

The Valley Mental Health Tooele Unit Adult Team is an outpatient unit that provides an array of services, including individual therapy, couple therapy, family therapy, group counseling, case management, clubhouse, and medication evaluation and management.

We also provide crisis intervention services, which is available 24 hours a day in Tooele County. Our unit works closely with the University of Utah Hospital, University Neuropsychiatric Institute, and other inpatient facilities in Salt Lake City to provide treatment for our most needy clients and non-clients who are in crisis. The Tooele Unit will provide follow-up treatment when a client is released from inpatient treatment.

Alcohol & Drug Unit

The Valley Mental Health Tooele Unit Alcohol & Drug Team provides for both adults and adolescents, with or without accompanying mental health disorders (dual diagnosis). Staff are licensed therapists who conduct individual, couple, family, and group sessions. Alcohol and drug adult groups are conducted Monday through Thursday evenings. Other services are also provided by appointment only. We also offer support services to significant others and families involved with a chemically dependent person.

One evidence based treatment approach from which we incorporate key elements is the CENAPS Model of Relapse Therapy (trademark)(Gorski), which espouses that both lifestyle and personality changes are essential for recovery from chemical addiction or abuse. Process work is postulated on the assumption that emotions may be based on irrational belief systems and repressed, for example, through “anesthetizing” substances. Relapse prevention may involve restructuring of the cognitive affect and irrational thinking errors associated with past events so that changed thinking, feeling, and behavior may lead to a functional non-substance using method of coping with life. Our program also utilizes task oriented groups to facilitate this outcome. One essential ingredient to successful outcome is to elicit from clients their own self-motivational thinking for change ala Motivational Enhancement Therapy through the techniques of cognitive-behavioral therapy and reverse positive peer pressure. Principals of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy are also utilized. Rather than a problem based focus on past events, client strengths are accessed, personal goals of the client are focused on and reinforced, and rewards for sobriety are shared.
