DUI Education Course

Purpose

The new state required PRIME FOR LIFE Driving Unimpaired curriculum is offered for all individuals referred by court for DUI offenses. It has been carefully designed to function as therapeutic education for people who make high-risk drinking choices. Coupling awareness, education, and a research-based persuasion protocol, the purpose of the program is to change actual drinking and drug use behavior.

Objectives

1. Identify common views and the new view of alcoholism
2. Learn that alcoholism is a lifestyle related health problem
3. Understand that alcoholism can happen to anyone
4. Identify alcohol-related impairment problems
5. Identify risk factors including tolerance level and trigger level
6. Identify low risk and high risk choices
7. Learn the Five Steps to Risk Reduction
8. Learn about risk reduction as it relates to other drugs
9. Learn the Phases of Use
10. Conduct self-assessment
11. Choose ones direction
12. Plan to succeed

Evaluation

A pre-post test designed by Prime for Life will be given. Students will be required to pass the post-test to receive credit for the course.

Method

The 16-hour curriculum will be offered Monday and Wednesday evenings (5:30--9:30) the first two weeks of every month. Courses in Spanish will be taught every third month.
