Parenting 101: Lunch & Learn

Purpose:

  1. To teach basic parenting skills to parents of children of all ages, in order to improve family management and relationships.

Objectives:

  1. Understand influences of their own parenting skills, and identify goals for themselves . . ~n parenting.
  2. Understand concepts of problem ownership, and select appropriate approaches for varying types of problems.
  3. Demonstrate increased skill in communicating effectively with their children.
  4. Demonstrate understanding and appropriate use of natural and logical consequences.
  5. Demonstrate improved ability to prevent power struggles and manage their own anger effectively.
  6. Understand developmental stages and personality characteristics of different children/people.
  7. Learn about emotional intelligence, self-esteem, media literacy, and family play as methods of improving family life and relationships with their children.

Evaluation:

  1. Participants will complete subjective evaluations upon completion of the course.
  2. Court ordered or DCFS referred participants will be given a certificate of completion.

Methods:

  1. The group will meet weekly for one hour in 12-session blocks.
  2. Additional time may be appropriated as requested by participants for viewing videos or using resource library.
  3. This group will be offered through Prevention at no charge to participants.
