Media in contemporary society is pervasive and powerful. Some experts contend it is the primary force that shapes people's perceptions, beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors. Media literacy aims to help people develop skills to understand, analyze, and evaluate the messages and stories of mass media. This increased knowledge and understanding of media's powerful influence will free individuals to make more conscious choices about their lives. Programs and presentations will be offered to students, teachers, parents, and the community. Topics to be covered are the media's influence on alcohol, tobacco, violence, body image, women's issues, men's issues, relationships, sex, as well as the general role of media in shaping contempory cultural and social environment.
