Valley Mental Health's Senior
Services: Psycho-Social
Rehabilitation
Psycho-Social Rehabilitation
works as a clubhouse model and believes in a philosophy of equality between
members and staff. Valley Mental Health has a unique relationship with an
independent community board. It believes work is important for all people,
including individuals with emotional disabilities. Everyone has the ability
not only to grow and adjust to their environment, but also to contribute
productively. The objective is to develop self-confidence, dependability,
and a feeling of self-esteem among members. It includes many functions, one
of which is to give members an opportunity to participate as colleagues. It
incorporates several different work units which are important in the
maintenance of the clubhouse. Participation in these units gives members an
opportunity to develop different skills and feel like an important part of
the club.
In-Home Skills
The main objective of
this service is to promote living skills of self-care, such as personal
hygiene, cleanliness, money management, food planning and preparation,
shopping, and improving relationships between neighbors, landlords, and
roommates through the case-management model.
Clients live independently, with no staff members on site. They are assisted
in learning to accept the regulations, accountability, and limitations
required for successful community living.
Case Management
Valley Mental
Health's Case Management is a care delivery system for a select population
of severely and persistently mentally ill consumers who have been
institutionalized for a significant period of time and require extensive
outpatient services to prevent further institutionalization. Case Management
replaces the structure of the hospital, nursing home, and/or residential
facility by providing a different level of support in the community. This
level of support, provided by a case manager, enables the consumer to
effectively utilize community resources. The relationship developed between
the case manager and the client appears to be a key factor in the client's
ability to
reach and maintain an optimal level of wellness.

Correctional

Health provides evaluation, assessment, therapy, and psycho-educational
classes for clients referred by the criminal justice system. The scope of
services include: anger and stress management, effective communication and
impulse control; alcohol and drug treatment; relapse prevention; cognitive
restructuring; domestic violence; and other specialized therapy for the
treatment of shoplifting, lewdness and women's issues. All classes are held
weekly and last from six to sixteen weeks. Individual psychotherapy is
available on a case-by-case basis. Those individuals requiring more
"traditional" therapy are referred to the appropriate units in the Valley
Mental Health system.
